How to Grill a Corn Cob on Gas Grill

Corn on the cob is a delicious snack during summertime. When grilled, it gets a smoky flavor that makes it an even sumptuous bite. From the simple boiled cob, you can level it up by grilling corn on gas grill. Also, grilling allows you to experiment with various flavors. So for this post, we will teach how to grill corn on gas grill together with flavor suggestions.

With or without the husk?

You can cook corn on portable natural gas grill with the husk on, but make sure that you shuck it a little bit to expose the silk. Try to remove as much silk as you can since this would burn on the grill and give your corn an off-taste. Still, leave the husk attached at the end.

The husk also protects the corn from getting burnt marks. However, if you want to munch on the corn right away, you should remove the husk and use a metal skewer instead.

Corn topping options

There are so many toppings and flavors you can put on your grilled corn. In fact, you can use just about anything that delights your taste buds.

Butter is probably the quintessential topping and glaze. However, you can also try the BBQ glaze using your favorite barbecue recipe.

One of our favorites is the Mexican-style flavor. You have to top the corn with cotija cheese, chilli powder, lime juice, cilantro, and a little bit of mayo. It has lots of ingredients, but boy, the taste is heavenly.

Aside from that, you can also try bacon and basil, beer butter, parmesan, Greek yogurt, and loads of your favorite herbs.

How to choose the best corn to grill

The key to a fresh and delicious grilled corn on the cob is choosing fresh ears. When shopping for corn, peel the husk a little so you can see the kernels.

But if you can’t do this on the store, we recommend getting corn ears with a golden color and a tinge of green. Also, the silk on top should be a little sticky, which means the corn is still fresh.

If the husk is crackly, dry-looking, and already brown, look for another store. Also, try to get a feel of each ear by squeezing it gently. Avoid those with holes or empty kernel spots.

If the corn is wrapped in plastic, you can only judge its quality based on its husk color. So far, we rarely get wrong with this method.

Cooking corn on the cob on gas grill

With your portable gas grill, let’s cook the best corn on the cob. Take note that even gas grills under $500 can produce the most delicious corn if you grill it right.

  1. 6 corn ears
  2. 1/4 cup of herbs (your choice!)
  3. 1 teaspoon of kosher salt
  4. Ground black pepper
  5. Unsalted butter

Optional flavorings:

  • Cayenne pepper
  • Cumin seeds
  • Spanish paprika
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Chopped garlic

Procedure

Step 1. Preheat your portable propane grill or any type of grill.

Step 2. Pull the husk of the corn and remove as much silk as possible. You can remove the husk entirely or fold it back.

Step 3. Mix one tablespoon of kosher salt with cold water and soak the corn in it for at least 10 minutes.

Step 4. Shake the corn off to remove the excess water. After that, set it in the grill and cover it (if it has a lid). Let it grill for 20 minutes, but make sure that you turn it every 5 minutes for even cooking.

Step 5. While you’re waiting for the corn to grill, mix all the herbs and spices that you’ll use to flavor the corn. Take note that you can use more ingredients based on your preferred taste.

Step 6. Check if the corn is soft enough using a paring knife. If you can slice it effortlessly, then your corn is fully cooked.

Step 7. A minute before you remove the corn from portable natural gas grills, douche it with your preferred topping. Let the butter melt or the herbs to wilt a little. After that, your sumptuous corn on the cob is ready to be served.
